Death of the Blue Zones

Dan Buettner, author of The Blue Zones, when visiting Nicoya, Costa Rica recently, identified what he referred to as “the death of the Blue Zones.” Specifically, he was referring to the addition of two American fast-food “restaurants” that now call Nicoya home. According to Dan, “As soon as the American food culture enters the front door, longevity leaves through the back door.”

He did write the book, and he’s not wrong. Healthy food was and remains a mainstay of the big picture of The Blue Zones. Anyone who thinks that they can eat fast food and live 100:100, at 100% for 100 years or more, is mistaken. It cannot be done, and there are plenty of studies, movies, and books to back up that statement.

The fact is, however, that people living in Nicoya, or anywhere in the world for that matter, can still create their own 100 Year Lifestyle. You can be your own Orange Zone. (100 Year Lifestyle orange!) You, your family, your community, can create the type of health we at the 100 Year Lifestyle talk about. It has never been about moving to one of the Blue Zones. It’s been about starting where you are with what you have to make the best choices for you.

Curious about the other Blue Zones, check them out here. Interested to read more about Nicoya, it’s residents, and the death of the Blue Zones? Keep reading.
